Preliminary Research

This is the preliminary research of the different genres

FilmGenre/Genre ConventionsHow did this scene introduce characters, settings and create intrigue? What did you like/dislike about the intro?
Extraction 2, 2023Action
Fight, explosion, guns
The scene shows us how the character is dying because of a gunshot and it shows short scenes of how the character is rushed into the hospital. It doesn’t show who is the main character or how the plot is going to progress. Therefore, the opening scene introduces the genre itself and their conventions.I like how they cut or show jump shots every few seconds to show the panic or the high pace action going on. However, I didn’t like the fact they didn’t introduce the character and who he is, so the stake of his life in the audience’s eye increases.
Pamali: The Corpse VillageHorror,
Dark images, ghost or scary creature
The scene introduces a guy who is putting the corpse into his grave. The shot shows images of rotten flesh with low key lighting but it doesn’t have any dialogue that indicates the main character or villain of the story. Therefore, the opening scene introduces the genre itself and their conventions.I like how the non diegetic music carries suspense and tension over each scene which really captivates how scary it is. However, I didn’t like the fact they didn’t introduce the character and who he is.
Uglies, 2024Sci Fi
futuristic gadgets, other planets
The uglies explains how the mechanics of this world are different from our ability to turn the “ugly” humans into perfect human beings to solve conflict. There are a lot of futuristic gadgets and talk about advanced science which conforms with the genre conventions. Therefore, the opening scene introduces the plot and where it will go.I like the mise en scene used for this movie and the realistic gadgets and visuals used to represent the movie. I just think they need to at least introduce some of the cast or a glimpse of the cast so the audience can sympathise with the community that are called “uglies”.
500 days of summer, 2009Romance
Girlfriend, Boyfriend, love, break up
The scene introduces the characters by showing their back story, their belief and how they met even though they seem completely the opposite of each other coming from different backgrounds. Therefore, The opening scene introduces their relationship.I like how they show flashbacks of their past selves showing the audience that they are the opposite of each other and how it would trigger a sense of curiosity of how the relationship could work in the audience. How they both are in the same “job space” to introduce the settings. The narrator /non diegetic also does a good job of explaining everything giving everything some context. I think this was a good scene with minimal flaws.
Johnny english, 2003Comedy
Two friends or more than two people, jokes,
The scene begins with an imaginary dream of the main character who is treated as a joke / insignificant in the first scenes making weird jokes here and there until eventually he suddenly becomes the star of the show. Therefore, the opening scene introduces the hero.I don’t like how it is more action then comedy as the jokes made were less and the characters dynamic doesn’t make the comedy genre stand out as much. However, I did like how in some scenes the action blended well with the comedy.

Self Reflection:
This research was done in class and after understanding the different genres use their conventions to set the tone and how the movies bend and use conventions for their openings. I realize some movies (Pamali: The Corpse Village) focus more on the genre conventions to engage the audience and some use the character development or plot to get the audience to watch. Our team team eventually decided on the second route which is using the plot however we did sprinkle in the genre conventions of the genre. Besides that, We also decided to opt for horror after doing extensive research for each genre.
